The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is the agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all (www.unhabitat.org).The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) works in over 90 countries to advance the achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development at the local level in accordance with the commitments and principles set out in the New Urban Agenda (NUA).
This internship position is located in the Coordination Office of the Regional Programme Division (CO/RPD) at Headquarter of UN-Habitat in Nairobi, Kenya. The CO/RPD serves as the coordination hub of planning, implementation and monitoring of regional programmes and country activities.
Under the CO/RPD, It’s collects and processes a variety of information and project implementation updates from the field, including regional and country offices, needed for corporate reporting, trends analysis, aggregation and policy guidance supporting the Division in delivering on its substantive mandate while providing a “one-stop office” for liaison and interaction between strategic and normative units at HQ (mainly ERSKID and GSD), on one hand, and regional offices, as well as MOCs and COs, on the other hand.
The main function of this internship is to assist the team, especially the Director of RPD, on routine communication and coordination with relative counterparts, withing and outside UN-Habitat. The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), Regional Programmes Division internship is for 6 (six) months. The Internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.
Responsibilities
Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background; the intern’s assigned office as well as the internship period. Under the supervision of the Associate Expert and Director of the Regional Programme Division (RPD), the intern will:
Support the liaison and communication with internal and external counterparts to facilitate the information exchange and knowledge management for the regional coordination.
Assist in organizing, participating, note-taking and report writing of meetings and events that related to regional coordination, etc.
Support cooperation activities collaborated with relevant donors, partners and other stakeholders.
Assist in advocacy and publicizing updates, news and any other matters related to regional development and events on social media of UN-Habitat.
Facilitate general administration on human resources, procurement maters and auditing, etc.
Support specific delegated responsibilities and any other activities of common interest to RPD and the Agency as whole Due to a high volume of applications received, ONLY successful candidates will be contacted.
Qualifications/special skills
Applicants MUST at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher),
Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent),
Have graduated with Bachelor’s degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent in the past two years.
Be computer literate in standard software applications (MS Office Suite). Demonstrate keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.
Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Preferred areas of study: Studies in Journalism and Communication, Business Administration, Social Sciences, Development Studies, Public Relations, Economics, International Relations, or any other related field.
Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required.
Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or Ph.D. Programme. Experience drafting technical reports and/or publications is desirable.
Experience working on social media and advocacy is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship position, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language is desirable.
