Kenya Maritime Authority Assistant Director, Marine Environment Jobs
Job Purpose
Responsible for ensuring protection of marine environment from shipping activities in accordance with International Conventions and national legislations relating to the marine environment.
Duties and responsibilities
Co-ordinates the development of the national oil spill response contingency plan for coastal and inland waterways
Supervises the review and update of the national oil spill response contingency plan for coastal and inland waters
Co-ordinates the implementation of the national oil spill response contingency plan for coastal and inland waters
Co-ordinates the implementation of strategies for monitoring and preventing oil spills in the coastal and inland waters
Co-operate with relevant stakeholders in the protection of marine environment from shipping activities
Conduct of pollution prevention inspections of Kenyan ports and navigable waterways
Conducting public awareness campaigns on prevention of ship source pollution.
Implementation of International Conventions and other instruments relating to marine pollution response and coordination
Integrate the climate change action plan into sectoral strategies, action plans and other implementation projections for the assigned legislative and policy functions;
Report on sectoral greenhouse gas emissions for the national inventory;
Regularly monitor and review the performance of the integrated climate change functions through sectoral mandates;
Put in place and implement mechanisms for sustainability in performance of sectoral mandates; and
Report annually to the Council on the status and progress of performance and implementation of all assigned climate change duties and functions.
Person Specifications
For appointment to this grade, an officer must:
Bachelor Degree in the Maritime field such as Nautical Science, Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Marine Environment or any other relevant qualifications from a recognized institution OR Certificate of Competency as Marine Engineer Officer or Deck Officer in accordance with the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watch keeping 1978,as amended
Master’s Degree in any of the following: Maritime Affairs, Marine Environment,Nautical Science, Marine Engineering, Naval Architecture or equivalent qualifications from a recognized institution will be an added advantage;
Must be a member of a relevant professional body in good standing;
Should have relevant experience for a minimum period of three (3) years;
Certificate in a Management Course from a recognized institution;
Good interpersonal relations, high leadership qualities and integrity;
Demonstrated values of governance as provided in the Constitution of Kenya;
Proficiency in computer applications;
A Management Course lasting not less than Four (4) weeks from a recognized institution;
Be a member of a relevant professional body where applicable;
