PATH Program Officer- Newborn Nutrition and Lactation Specialist Jobs in Ethiopia

PATH is a global nonprofit dedicated to achieving health equity. With more than 40 years of experience forging multisector partnerships, and with expertise in science, economics, technology, advocacy, and dozens of other specialties, PATH develops and scales up innovative solutions to the world’s most pressing health challenges.

PATH’s Primary Health Care program is comprised of six teams: Health Systems, Early Childhood Development, HIV/TB/Viral hepatitis, Integrated Maternal and Child Health and Development (IMCHD) Noncommunicable Diseases, and Sexual and Reproductive Health. Our IMCHD team is a global leader in advocating for and in implementing approaches along the continuum of care and integration of health systems to optimize impact.

Specifically, the IMCHD newborn nutrition team has pioneered advances in optimizing care for small and sick newborns, with focus on the linkage between nutrition and newborn care. Although human milk is the recommended feeding option for these vulnerable newborns (pre-term, low birthweight, sick or small), they – and their mothers – face unique challenges due to physiologic and systems level barriers often preventing human milk consumption.

To address this, the newborn nutrition team has established the Mother-Baby Friendly Initiative Plus, a comprehensive approach for ensuring equitable access to lifesaving human milk for small and sick newborns, including specialized lactation support and locally appropriate human milk banks for safe provision of donor human milk when needed.

PATH works with Ministries of Health and global/regional policy and technical leaders to design and implement sustainable systems as part of a global movement to improve the quality of care for this target population. Advancing these efforts across key geographies is a current PATH priority.

PATH is currently recruiting an IMCHD Program Officer to provide technical and advocacy work in integrating a nutrition package of care into models of care for the small and sick newborn. This IMCHD staff will bring deep technical and clinical knowledge of specialized lactation support needs for small and sick newborns and their mothers.

The IMCHD program officer will have the following primary responsibilities:

  • Support the creation, adaptation, and piloting of newborn nutrition implementation materials, embedding specialized lactation support requirements;

    Implementation science research protocols and planning.

  • Work as collaborative multi-country, diverse team;
