Background, Organizational Setting and Reporting Relationships:
The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), is the agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all.
The Advocacy and Campaign Unit leads agency-wide advocacy activities and campaigns to support UN-Habitat’s vision, objectives and solutions-oriented culture, as well as leverage partnerships. It is based in the External Relations and Partnerships Branch, located in the Division of External Relations, Strategy, Knowledge and Innovation.
The Unit’s objectives are to raise awareness on sustainable urbanization and engage partners in implementing the New Urban Agenda, the Sustainable Development Goals and other internationally agreed related goals in the context of the UN Decade of Action to 2030.
The Unit develops and implements advocacy and campaign activities that help promote agreed thematic priorities of UN-Habitat. Team members work collaboratively with substantive units to deploy meaningful and effective advocacy while leveraging a wide range of partner organizations through a client-oriented approach to support advocacy and increase the visibility of UN-Habitat. Key functions include: conceptualization of advocacy and campaigns; campaign implementation and monitoring; partners’ mobilization and engagement.
Through the World Urban Campaign (WUC), a key advocacy and engagement platform on sustainable urbanization, the Unit mobilizes organizations and citizens, promotes dialogue, solutions and actions between a variety of actors. The Unit acts as the Secretariat for the WUC and coordinates its Steering Committee and working groups, WUC Assembly meetings, manage partnerships, prepare, disseminate advocacy materials and social media to show case urban solutions on selected topics, raising awareness of urban issues and promoting effective solutions and actions.
In 2024, the WUC will implement the Egypt Urban Campaign, designed to engage Egyptian-based partner organizations on the lead to the 12th session of the World Urban Forum (WUF12) to be held in Cairo on 4-8 November 2024.
Objective of the Consultancy
The consultancy will focus on the Egypt Urban Campaign, under the World Urban Campaign. The consultant will manage the partners of the Egypt Urban Campaign, to support the different events held — Urban Thinkers Campus events, webinars and talks, sport events, exhibitions, competitions, tours, etc.—through online announcements, stories promoting results of events and speakers, analysis of urban solutions generated during the campaign.
The consultant will prepare web-based content, social media posts on all WUC channels, prepare regular partners meetings and activity
reports, support at least two general campaign in-person meetings in Cairo, prepare a final report that will present results of activities and solutions promoted by the partners during the campaign.
In addition, the consultant will also help identify suitable speakers from the World Urban Campaign and the Egypt Urban Campaign to potentially participate in the 12th session of the World Urban Forum, through a set of speakers profiles in various categories of stakeholders.
