Project Description

This project will be the pilot/first implementation of the Shamiri Intervention: a stigma-free, simple, positively-focused intervention that emphasizes wellbeing, and academic and social improvements. This approach differs from a psychopathology-focused intervention to avoid social and cultural barriers that make mental healthcare inaccessible to African youths.

This intervention is cost-effective, brief, accessible, and delivered through a network of near-peer lay providers (group leaders) in local school settings, unlike treatments delivered by professionals. The Shamiri intervention is simple, scalable, and effective. The group leaders delivering the interventions will be supervised by clinical supervisors who can provide one-on-one counseling to students and handle any emergency cases.

​​This project aims to test the efficacy of the Shamiri Intervention when implemented amongst Ethiopian youths. Our team predicts that this intervention will significantly reduce participants’ symptoms of depression and anxiety.

Role Description

This role will make a significant contribution to this project by providing clinical counseling support to study participants (secondary school students) when necessary and providing guidance for lay-providers who will deliver the intervention.

Key Tasks

Completing a 6-week supervisor training program.

Attending and assisting with group leader training.

Supervising group leaders throughout the implementation period.

Assisting with logistical aspects of intervention delivery, particularly in preparation for and during implementation at schools.

Acting as a line of communication between group leaders and project staff.

Attending weekly meetings with fellow supervisors.

During implementation, drafting and submitting weekly reports highlighting the following: special cases reported, challenges reported during the week, positive highlights of the week, etc.

Job Requirements

Necessary

Bachelor’s Degree in psychology, social work or appropriate field of study or equivalent work experience

Proven working experience in project and team management

Excellent client-facing and internal communication skills

Solid organizational skills, including attention to detail and multitasking skills

Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Strong working knowledge of Google Apps

Recommended

Experience in a research project which involved field work

Experience in university extracurricular club leadership.
