Shamiri Institute Clinical Supervisor Jobs in Ethiopia
Introduction
Shamiri Institute is a data-driven organization that develops and implements low cost and low-stigma mental health interventions to help young people thrive. Their mission is to provide at-risk low-income youths, in Sub-Saharan Africa and beyond, with the tools to improve their life outcomes.
Founded by Harvard graduates and launched in Kenya in 2018, this non-profit organization combines rigorous social science research with deep contextual knowledge of the educational and mental healthcare systems in Sub-Saharan Africa. Since 2018, they have deployed intervention sessions to over 32,000 students in Kenyan Secondary Schools.
Shamiri Institute is now collaborating with SUNEKO Art for Social Development to work in Addis Abeba. SUNEKO is a national Nonprofit organization, which started its operation in Ethiopia in 2014. SUNEKO is established with the belief that Art can make a tangible social change among the society. It is intended to create an Amateur sport, Art, and Culture to build the society, create alternative jobs and use art as a healing tool for mental health, social issues, and impact causes.
Project Description
This project will be the pilot/first implementation of the Shamiri Intervention: a stigma-free, simple, positively-focused intervention that emphasizes wellbeing, and academic and social improvements. This approach differs from a psychopathology-focused intervention to avoid social and cultural barriers that make mental healthcare inaccessible to African youths.
This intervention is cost-effective, brief, accessible, and delivered through a network of near-peer lay providers (group leaders) in local school settings, unlike treatments delivered by professionals. The Shamiri intervention is simple, scalable, and effective. The group leaders delivering the interventions will be supervised by clinical supervisors who can provide one-on-one counseling to students and handle any emergency cases.
This project aims to test the efficacy of the Shamiri Intervention when implemented amongst Ethiopian youths. Our team predicts that this intervention
will significantly reduce participants’ symptoms of depression and anxiety.
Role Description
This role will make a significant contribution to this project by providing clinical counseling support to study participants (secondary school students) when necessary and providing guidance for lay-providers who will deliver the intervention.
