Org. Setting and Reporting

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

UNEP’s Corporate Services Division is the guardian of UNEP’s corporate interest, mitigating its exposure to risk and supporting the organization with management tools, plans and related capacity building. It oversees UNEP’s efficient and effective management, in line with UNEP’s accountability requirements, rules, regulations and UN core values.

This post is located in UNEP’s Programme Advisory Services Unit (PASU), Corporate Services Division at the Nairobi duty station. The PASU provides seamless integration in operational areas which support and enhance programme delivery on behalf of Corporate Services Division (CSD).

Under the supervision of the Head of Programme Advisory Section, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties:

Responsibilities

• Independently provides full range of data analysis assistance at all phases of a data analysis initiative, typically, a large and highly complex component of the departmental data analysis initiatives, seeking guidance only in exceptional circumstances.

• Serves as a focal point for coordination, monitoring and expedition of data analysis activity, involving extensive liaison with diverse parts of the organization to request data and to communicate data needs to other parts of the organization. Follows-up on requests made by other team members and coordinates activities.

• Maintains specific information products in their area and assists more senior staff in providing information products to others.

• Drafts correspondence and communications related to all aspects of data analysis, including information on available data sets, data catalogs and data analysis, revisions and other related issues, as well as preparing unit contributions for a variety of periodic reports.

• Prepares newsletters and other products related to data analysis activities; drafts inputs for a wide range of documents/reports, briefings/debriefings, correspondence.

• Provides guidance and training to new/junior staff.

• Provides Business Intelligence guidance and training to UNEP data analysts.

• Supervises other general service staff in the function.

• Performs other duties as assigned.

Demonstrates the ability to coordinate efforts of others and reviews their contributions. Assists with analysis, modeling and interpretation of data in support of decision-making. Writes queries, prepares draft reports and them and finds innovative ways to present findings in data products.
  • Planning & Organization: Develops clear goals that are consistent with agreed strategies; identifies priority activities and assignments; adjusts priorities as required; allocates appropriate amount of time and resources for completing work; foresees risks and allows for contingencies when planning; monitors and adjusts plans and actions as necessary; uses time efficiently.

    Education

  • Completion of High school diploma or equivalent.

    Job – Specific Qualification

  • Supplementary training in data analysis, budget or related fields is required.

    Work Experience

  • A minimum of ten years of experience in in data science, data analytics, applied mathematics, information management, data analytics, or related area is required. The minimum years of relevant experience is reduced by two (2) for candidates who possess a first-level university degree or higher.
  • Experience in programming languages such as M, Python, SQL and statistical programming is required.
  • Experience with SAP Analytics Cloud is desirable.
  • Experience with Power BI is desirable.
  • Experience with the extraction, processing and analysis of data is desirable.

    Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is desirable.
