Call for LGBTQIA+ Youth Stories in Africa

Radio Workshop is taking pitches in English for the next series of stories from African audio producers who have a story that explores the lives of LGBTQIA+ youth anywhere on the continent.

Radio Workshop is an award-winning documentary-style podcast with a strong focus on youth in Africa. They are committed to working with and training youth reporters between the ages of 18 and 35. They also partner with more seasoned reporters who have a story that centres the voices of youth.

The editorial process is fully remote. You will be working with a team based all over the world. They strongly believe storytellers deserve to be compensated fairly. You will be paid for the story and any expenses incurred. The exact fee is based on the nature, length, and complexity of the finished piece.

They are open to working with new and seasoned audio producers who can conduct in-person reporting. They are also keen to work with filmmakers, documentary-makers, anthropologists, sociologists, activists, artists, and anyone who can and wants to make an audio story.

What they are looking for?

  • Personal, powerful and memorable stories from young people.
  • Deeply intimate stories from people with first-hand experience with being LGBTQIA+.
  • Stories that connect to larger issues in the country, on the continent, or in the world.

    Geography Focus

  • They are very interested in hearing pitches from Uganda, Senegal, Botswana, Mozambique, Nigeria, Tanzania, Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire, and Liberia. But they’re open to pitches from anywhere in Africa.

    Criteria

  • They encourage sound-rich audio stories reported on-location that puts listeners in the shoes of what it means to be LGBTQIA+.
  • They want to make 10-15 minute narrative, non-fiction stories, where listeners learn about the issues facing people who are LGBTQIA+ through story. That means your story must start with a person who you want to profile.
  • They are not looking for stories about a topic (eg. news events, laws, anniversaries, speeches) unless you know a young person who will tell them a personal story about their connection to the topic.
