The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is an impartial, neutral and independent organisation with the exclusively humanitarian mission to protect the lives and dignity of victims of war and internal violence and to provide them with assistance.

It also endeavours to prevent suffering by promoting and strengthening International Humanitarian Law and universal humanitarian principles. The ICRC’s Regional Delegation in Nairobi co-ordinates the institution’s humanitarian activities in Kenya, Tanzania and Djibouti.

Overall Responsibility

The Trends, Reputation, Analysis and Knowledge (TRAK) team is strongly connected to security, emergency and global risks situations, providing quality and timely analysis of open-source information to support and facilitate decision-making for crisis response and risk anticipation & mitigation.

TRAK is growing and is looking for information analysts based in regional hubs who will be part of TRAK’s global network.

The Regional Information analyst based in Nairobi closely collaborates with the regional management team and the regional resource network to provide concrete information analyses, reports and insights on issues, events and trends reported on in open sources and which might have an impact on ICRC operations, acceptance and security in the region.

They use their regional expertise, knowledge of contexts and languages to assess the quality of information gathered, and to make sense of the information and data captured while bridging it with internal knowledge.

By looking for facts, assessing and validating the credibility of information and sources, the information analyst provides an objective complementary reading of conflict and violent environments and therefore contributes to reinforcing the ICRC identity of a neutral and independent humanitarian (NIHA) actor in the region.

Tasks and responsibilities

Using information and data from a wide range of open sources, the information analyst:

  • Collaborates closely with the regional team, the Regional Resource Network (RRN) and Communications (COM) and supports the implementation of the Regional Strategic Framework (RSF) by writing contextualized and targeted information analyses on operational and strategic themes and trends;
  • Anticipates information needs and proposes sustainable information analysis services. Makes valuable contribution to information by assessing the veracity or quality of its sources, connecting the dots, curating and summarizing key content, adding political reading and contextual knowledge and making recommendations;
  • Carries out tailored in-depth research and gives input to the analysis (quantitative and qualitative) on specific thematic issues. Identifies existing and emerging influential online voices and networks and opportunities to engage with them;
  • Monitors and alerts at an early stage on issues and risks that can potentially impact ICRC operations, security and/or reputation in the region and shares an early reading;
  • In times of crisis and emergencies, actively supports colleagues involved in crisis response mechanisms at Head Quarter and in concerned delegations through monitoring and analysis, with a focus on security, protection and reputation, as well as regional dynamics & geopolitics;
  • Closely collaborates with other subject matter specialists and the data analytics working group, for the establishment of a regional transversal and complementary approach to data and information; to better use and bridge internal and external sources and information;
  • Leads the response to information analysis requests requiring regional & contextualized information analysis (assigned through TRAK’s information request management system);
  • Participates and contributes to transversal and multidisciplinary working groups in the region by combining regional expertise with qualitative analysis of open source information;
  • Participates in coordinated research efforts with the TRAK analysts based in Geneva, Belgrade, Brasilia, Amman, Bangkok and Dakar and with a worldwide network of regional / local contributors;
  • Ensures optimum information sharing among environmental scanning (ES) officers in the region and other members of the network; Coordinates, organizes and feeds Ginkgo’s spaces that are relevant to the region;
  • Supports in coordinating with local external information analysis service providers (think tanks, NGOs, media, universities…) and identify relevant sources and events (thematic webinars, panel discussions, reports…);
  • Implements TRAK processes, methodologies and best practices on (crisis) information analysis and disseminates these among ES officers and information analysts in the region;
  • Complies data privacy rules of the organization, and other guidelines and procedures in place.

    Minimum Requirements and competencies

  • University degree in Communication, Journalism, Political science, Conflict studies, International relations or other relevant fields;
  • 10+ years of overall professional experience. At least 3-5 years in monitoring and analyzing open source information to support decision making, including & preferably in the humanitarian field;
  • Excellent digital literacy: MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint essential, knowledge of data visualization tools an asset;
  • Excellent communication skills in English, including the ability to present research findings and analysis in written form;
  • Professional knowledge of French or Swahili a strong asset.

    Desired Profile and Skills

  • Excellent web-based research skills; proven experience navigating (media) monitoring tools, search engines and social listening platforms;
  • Ability to analyze and articulate complex issues and formulate recommendations based on available information;
  • Solid knowledge of the regional media and social media landscape;
  • Strong understanding of geopolitics, socio-economic issues and conflict studies in the region;
  • Autonomous & proactive teammate;
  • Attention to detail, analytical rigour, and impartiality;
  • Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills, including an ability to work in a multicultural environment and part of a remote network;
  • Genuine interest in neutral humanitarian action.
