Introduction

The Africa Christian Health Associations Platform (ACHAP) is a regional organization that provides a platform for Christian health Associations and networks in Africa. ACHAP brings together more than 40 national level faith-based networks providing health services through faith-based health facilities and programs in 32 countries across Sub-Saharan Africa to share resources, establish technical working groups (TWGs), and provide ongoing training and technical assistance (TA) to its members.

In addition, governments see ACHAP members as critical players, and in many African countries, partner with them to provide health support services in government facilities and at the community level.

Program Background

The African Christian Health Associations Platform (ACHAP) is implementing the Promoting COVID-19 Vaccine Equity Through Faith-Based Networks in Africa project.

The project provides substantial resources to Eight Christian Health Associations (CHAs) that have the capacity and opportunity to make a significant contribution to vaccine rollout efforts in coordination with their respective Ministry of Health (MoH): the Zimbabwe Association of Church-Related Hospitals (ZACH) and the Christian Health Association Sierra Leone (CHASL), Churches Health Association of Zambia (CHAZ), Christian Health Association of Liberia (CHAL), Christian Social Services Commission (CSSC), Church of Jesus Christ Madagascar (FJKM), Association des Oeuvres Médicales pour la Sante en Centrafrique (ASSOMESCA), and Initiatives Chretiennes Pour La Promotion Humaine (ICPH)

Project overall goal:

To reduce the loss of life and spread of COVID-19 in Sub-Saharan Africa, contributing to global health security through targeted capacity strengthening of Christian Health Association networks.

Project Objectives:

  • Objective 1: CHAs work through their member institutions to deliver or promote COVID-19 vaccines in their respective countries.
  • Objective 2: Faith-based health providers and community and religious leaders are engaged in the promotion of trusted and evidence-based communication (and countering misinformation) around COVID-19 vaccines and other public health issues.
  • Objective 3: ACHAP works effectively at international levels to ensure that CHAs are recognized and resourced as critical partners with their national ministries of health in addressing global health security.
  • Target: Eight Christian Health Associations in six countries; ZACH, CHASL, CHAZ, ASSOMESCA, FJKM, ICPH, CSSC and CHALi.

    Purpose of the Consultancy:

    ACHAP is currently looking for a consultant who possesses expertise in emergency preparedness and response capacity building, with specific knowledge of the Global Health Security Agenda (GHSA). Additionally, the ideal candidate should have experience collaborating with NGOs to enhance Christian Health Associations’ preparedness practices.

    Scope of Work:

    The consultant will be responsible for the following tasks:

  • Facilitating a one-day peer-to-peer learning workshop aimed at fostering collaborative knowledge exchange with special emphasis on identifying best practices implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic, drawing lessons from past experiences, highlighting successful approaches, as well as identifying areas that require improvement. Moreover, the participants will actively engage in action planning, seeking effective solutions and strategies to enhance preparedness capacity.
  • Facilitating a 3-day workshop on Emergency preparedness and Response focusing on the critical link to the Global Health Security Agenda.
  • Provision of technical assistance to health care and public health clients in all aspects of emergency preparedness, response, and recovery; including development of drafting of emergency preparedness plans
  • Throughout the workshop, the consultant can incorporate interactive elements such as breakout sessions, group and individual exercises, and Q&A sessions to keep participants engaged. Additionally, provide participants with relevant resources and materials that they can refer to during and after the workshop to support their learning and emergency preparedness planning.

    Timeline: 28th to 31st /August/2023

    Consultant Qualifications:

    We are seeking a highly experienced consultant with expertise in emergency response, public health, and knowledge management. The ideal candidate should possess the following qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in public health or a related field and 5+ years post-master’s experience working in public health and/or healthcare preparedness -or- a bachelor’s degree in public health or a related field and 10+ years of experience working in health care preparedness and public health emergency preparedness.
  • Experience developing emergency plans for public health and health care, such as plans for emerging infectious diseases, medical surge, medical countermeasures distribution, and health-related sheltering functions.
  • Experience designing and implementing training programs, as well as excellent training and facilitation skills.
  • Experience of delivering capacity building workshops on emergency Preparedness and response.
  • Experience working with International and local NGOs for emergency preparedness or humanitarian response.
  • Extensive experience as a trainer and facilitator, with over 5 years of well-documented and proven expertise in the field of training.
  • Proficiency in the English language is a requirement, and the ability to speak French would be considered a valuable additional skill.
