To the people who read Paradise Lost, what happened in that book?

For context, in class we were reading the original Frankenstein book and in one part when got to the part where the monster starts to read “Paradise Lost” and said that he doesn’t want any religious person to read it because he thinks it might sway people from what they believe in so the question is what happens in that book specifically?
