Things that are within my control work best, eg. something I am wearing, a skill I have developed, something I did well, as opposed to something that is out of my control.
Swap compliments like “you have nice eyes” to “I like the way you did your make up, it brings out your eyes” and it comes across as more sincere and I appreciate the acknowledgement
